Examplar; Fast Draw World Champion Howard Darby.

THE SLAP-COCK DRAW.

Step 1. Get your hands in the correct position.

You should use your dominant hand to hold and fire the gun. Place your dominant hand close to the gun on your hip holster. Get ready to place the last three fingers of your hand around the handle (but do not touch it yet), so they can quickly grab and draw. Your index finger should be directly above the hammer trigger guard, ready to be inserted when you hear "Draw". Place your other hand directly above the hammer of the gun in its holster so that your index finger is in place to fan the hammer.

Gunfighters Rule; DO NOT TOUCH ANY PART OF THE GUN UNTIL YOU HEAR "DRAW" OR UNTIL THE BAD GUY DRAWS!

Step 2. On "Draw" close the fingers of your dominant hand around the handle of the gun.
Simultaneously, with your other hand, pull back the hammer and cock the gun. This should take less than a tenth of a second.

Step 3. Remove the gun from the holster.

Pull the handle of the gun from the holster so that the nose is still pointing downwards. As you do so, insert your trigger finger - usually your index finger - into the trigger.

Step 4. Get the gun into shooting position.

You only need to clear the nose of the gun past the leather and point it toward your opponent to squeeze off the shot - do not worry about elevating it any higher. Aim as soon as the nose of the gun is clear of the holster, and be ready to shoot from the hip. Depending on your skill - you can aim for any part of your opponents body. The key in quick draw, however, is to be the first to draw, shoot and hit your target. It is very difficult to draw and hit a specific target - hand knee, shoulder - at high speed. So just focus on the big picture.

Step 5. Pull the trigger and fire the gun.

You will be allowed only one shot - unless your opponents has enemies aiming a rifle at you from the general store.

THE THUMBING DRAW

This is a one-handed draw in which the thumb of the firing hand is used to fan the hammer while the index finger of the same hand pulls the trigger.

Step 1; Place your hand near the gun.

Using your dominant hand, place your thumb over and parallel to the hammer of the gun. Place the last three fingers of your hand so that they can grab the handle of the gun and draw. Your index finger should again be directly outside the trigger guard.

Step 2. On "Draw" fan the hammer, with your thumb and close the fingers of your dominant hand around the handle of the gun.

You should bring your thumb straight down on the hammer and cock it with the ball of your thumb. This move should take less than a tenth of a second.

Step 3. Put the gun in the shooting position.

Remove the gun from the holster, clear the nose of the gun past the leather, aim, and shoot from the hip.

TIPS; As you discover which draw works best for you, practice the moves again and again so that they become second nature.
As you practice, you will begin to “know” where you have to be in order to hit the target. When the time comes, you will automatically line up for the draw and can devote your concentration to the draw itself. Trust that if you are lined up right, you will hit the target.
BE CAREFUL; Both drawing techniques require that the gun be cocked before it clears the holster.
BEWARE of your own friendly fire, and wear steel towed boots just in case.

HAPPY TRAILS
